How do you get mumps?

The virus can pass between people in a home, classroom or other close-contact setting. Sharing cups, bottles or cutlery may also transfer saliva. A person can spread mumps before the jaw-area swelling is obvious, so someone may not realise they are infectious. Avoid close contact while you are unwell, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands, and do not share drinks or utensils. Arrange a GP Consultation for advice about testing, staying away from work or school, and protecting household members. MMR Vaccination helps prevent mumps and is worth discussing if your vaccination history is uncertain.

Contact a clinician if you develop facial or jaw swelling, fever, marked headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, unusual drowsiness, testicular pain or severe abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, a seizure, confusion or a rapidly worsening condition. Mention any close contact with a person who may have mumps.
