What should you know about multiple small lumps under skin?

A cluster of lumps may represent cysts, blocked follicles, inflamed areas, fatty lumps, enlarged tissue, or another skin growth. Boils are often tender, red, and warm as inflammation develops, while other lumps may be soft, mobile, or painless. Basal cell carcinoma more often appears as a changing spot or growth on sun-exposed skin rather than a cluster of identical lumps, but any unusual lesion should be checked. Because touch and appearance cannot confirm the cause, a clinician may examine the area and decide whether further testing is useful.

Record when the lumps appeared and whether they are growing, painful, itchy, draining, or linked to a recent injury, shaving, injection, or infection. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press them. Arrange a routine assessment for persistent or unexplained lumps, especially if the group is new. Treatment depends on the cause; a clinician may discuss local care, removal, drainage, or an intralesional steroid injection for selected inflamed lesions.

Seek prompt care for rapidly enlarging lumps, severe pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or red streaking. Have a lump assessed sooner if it is hard, fixed, bleeding, ulcerated, or repeatedly changing. Urgent evaluation is appropriate when swelling is near the eye, affects movement, or occurs with breathing or swallowing difficulty.

Ask what features distinguish cysts, boils, and other growths, whether the lumps need imaging or sampling, and what changes should prompt urgent review. Bring a list of medicines and any photographs showing how the area has changed.
