What should you know about multifocal osteomyelitis symptoms?

Osteomyelitis is inflammation and infection involving bone. When it is multifocal, symptoms may occur at separate sites rather than in one continuous area. Affected areas can feel persistently painful or tender, and nearby skin may become warm or swollen. Movement may become difficult when a joint lies close to an affected bone. Fever, chills, tiredness, or feeling generally unwell can occur, but their absence does not rule out a bone problem. Symptoms can develop quickly or build gradually, so the pattern and progression matter.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for unexplained bone pain with swelling, warmth, fever, or reduced use of a limb. Tell the clinician every painful site, when each symptom began, recent wounds, injections, surgery, fractures, dental problems, and health conditions that affect immunity. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and imaging; a sample may be needed to identify the cause. Until reviewed, protect the painful area, avoid strenuous loading, keep fluids up if you can, and use medicines only as directed.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, confusion, faintness, shaking chills, trouble breathing, or a limb that becomes very swollen, pale, blue, or difficult to move. A draining wound near bone, new weakness, or inability to bear weight also needs rapid review. Do not rely on pain relief alone when symptoms are spreading to other sites.
