What should you know about multifocal glioma?

Multifocal means that imaging shows tumour areas in more than one brain region. The areas may be close together or separated by tissue that looks different on a scan. Symptoms depend on the regions involved and can include seizures, headaches, changes in speech, weakness, vision problems, memory changes, or altered behaviour.

MRI helps map the lesions and surrounding swelling. A biopsy or surgery may provide tissue for diagnosis and molecular testing when it can be done safely. The appearance on a scan cannot fully determine the tumour type or grade, so the neuro-oncology team combines imaging, tissue findings, examination, and the person’s goals.

Bring a list of symptoms, medicines, seizures, and changes in daily function to the appointment. Ask whether the lesions can be sampled, removed, or treated with a plan that protects speech, movement, memory, and other important functions. Depending on the findings, care may include surgery, radiotherapy, medicines, rehabilitation, seizure treatment, or symptom control.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and report new side effects. Do not drive or operate machinery if seizures or neurological changes make those activities unsafe; follow local medical advice about restrictions.

Call emergency services for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than usual, repeated seizures without recovery, sudden one-sided weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, or a rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. These changes can reflect swelling, bleeding, seizure activity, or another urgent neurological problem.

Where are the tumour areas, and which functions could they affect? Is tissue sampling recommended, and what would it show? What treatment sequence is being considered? How will scans measure change? What support is available for seizures, rehabilitation, work, and daily activities?
