What should you know about MSI-high immunotherapy?

Microsatellites are repeated DNA sections. When mismatch repair is impaired, copying errors can accumulate and the tumour may be called MSI-high. The finding comes from tumour testing; it is not a symptom, cancer stage or promise of treatment response.

MSI-high can occur in bowel, stomach, womb and other cancers. Sometimes the pattern is limited to tumour cells; sometimes the result and family history lead to inherited-risk counselling. Your team interprets it with the complete pathology and clinical picture.

Ask which test identified MSI-high status and whether mismatch-repair testing was also performed. Discuss whether immunotherapy fits your cancer type, stage, previous treatment and general health. Ask how scans, blood tests and symptoms will guide decisions.

Immune treatment can inflame organs. Keep the oncology contact details available and report new diarrhoea, rash, cough, breathlessness, yellowing skin or unusual weakness promptly.

Contact your treatment team promptly for persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, a new rash, worsening cough, breathlessness, yellow skin or eyes, severe headache, confusion or unusual weakness. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden neurological symptoms or rapidly worsening illness.
