What should you know about a movable lump under the skin?

A lump that shifts slightly beneath the fingers may sit in the skin or fatty tissue rather than being fixed to deeper structures. Cysts can feel smooth and rounded, while lipomas are often soft and mobile. A tender, warm lump may reflect inflammation or an infection such as a boil. A breast, neck, armpit, or groin lump has its own range of possible causes and deserves an examination rather than a self-diagnosis. Skin lumps are commonly assessed by looking at the surface and checking size, firmness, mobility, tenderness, and nearby lymph nodes.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the area; these actions can irritate tissue and introduce infection. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is growing, and whether the skin has changed. Arrange a clinical assessment for a new lump that persists, returns, or concerns you. A clinician may monitor it, use imaging, or recommend removal or sampling when its appearance is unclear. Treatment depends on the cause; selected inflamed lesions may be considered for a steroid injection into the skin.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, red, draining, or associated with fever. Also arrange timely assessment for a hard or fixed lump, bleeding or ulcerated skin, numbness, or a lump that does not settle. A changing sore or growth can require evaluation for conditions such as basal cell carcinoma, while a painful pus-filled lump may need care for a boil.

Ask what tissue the lump appears to involve, whether its mobility and firmness are reassuring, and whether it needs imaging or a sample. Ask which changes should trigger an earlier review and whether squeezing, heat, or an injection could make it worse.
