Motion sickness while playing games: what to know

Short answer
Playing games can trigger motion sickness when visual movement conflicts with signals from your inner ear and body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Camera motion, rapid turns and virtual reality
- Best first step
- Pause when symptoms begin
- Helpful adjustment
- Reduce visual movement and improve room lighting
Why games can cause symptoms
First-person movement, rapid turns, camera shake, narrow fields of view and virtual reality can make the eyes report motion while the body is still. The brain has difficulty reconciling those messages, which may lead to nausea, dizziness, sweating, headache, eye strain or vomiting. Sensitivity varies by game, display, frame stability and the player.
Symptoms are a reason to pause, not something to push through. Continuing can make recovery take longer and can increase the chance of losing balance when you stand.
Make play easier
Stop at the first warning sign and rest in a quiet place. For a later session, try a shorter play period, sit farther from the screen, increase room lighting, keep the display stable and avoid playing when tired or dehydrated. Turn off camera shake, reduce motion blur, slow camera sensitivity and choose a wider field of view if the game allows it.
In virtual reality, keep the play area clear, remain seated for experiences that provoke symptoms and remove the headset as soon as discomfort starts. Fresh air and a distant fixed view may help. Do not use medicine to keep playing without checking with a pharmacist or clinician.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if symptoms repeatedly occur with ordinary screens, continue long after you stop playing, or happen without visual motion. Seek urgent help for new weakness, fainting, confusion, severe headache, trouble speaking, chest pain, breathing difficulty or vomiting that prevents drinking.
Questions to ask
Ask whether your symptoms suggest motion sensitivity, migraine, an eye problem or an inner-ear condition. Ask which settings or gradual return plan may be sensible, and whether any medicine is appropriate for occasional travel as well as gaming.

Questions people ask
Why do games make me feel sick when I am sitting still?
The eyes may signal movement while the inner ear and body signal stillness, creating a sensory mismatch.
Should I finish a game session if I feel dizzy?
No. Stop and recover; returning later with gentler settings may be more comfortable.
