Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. It can cause an expanding, itchy or scaly rash with a more active edge, although appearance varies by skin tone and body site. Topical antifungal treatment is commonly used for a small area of skin. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when infection covers a broad area, affects the scalp or nails, returns, or does not respond to suitable topical care. A clinician may check whether another rash is mimicking ringworm before changing treatment.

Use the recommended medicine on clean, dry skin and continue for the advised period, even if itching settles first. Wash hands after applying it, keep the area dry, change towels and clothing regularly, and avoid sharing personal items. Check household members and pets for suspicious patches if infection keeps returning, because contact can reintroduce the fungus. Avoid steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician specifically recommends it; steroids can alter the appearance and allow infection to spread.

Arrange medical review if the rash involves the scalp, beard, face, or nails, spreads quickly, becomes painful or oozes, or fails to improve with correctly used treatment. Seek earlier advice for a child, pregnancy, diabetes, immune suppression, or a history of repeated infections.
