What should you know about the most accurate cholesterol test?

Short answer

A laboratory cholesterol test is most useful when interpreted with your health history, medicines and other cardiovascular risk factors.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test measures

A cholesterol test, also called a lipid profile, usually reports total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. These blood fats help a clinician understand cardiovascular risk, but a single result does not describe your whole health or predict an event on its own.

The result can be influenced by recent illness, changes in weight, diet, alcohol, activity, pregnancy and medicines. Your clinician may compare it with earlier results and consider blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, kidney health and family history.

Preparing for testing

Follow the instructions given by the laboratory or clinician. Some people can have a non-fasting sample, while others may be asked to avoid food for a period before collection, particularly when triglycerides or a specific clinical question matter.

Tell the clinician about prescribed medicines, supplements, pregnancy, recent illness and any difficulty following preparation instructions. Do not stop a medicine to alter the result unless the prescriber tells you to do so.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review when a result is unexpectedly high, when you have a strong family history of early heart disease, or when testing is part of a wider concern such as diabetes. Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse or sudden neurological symptoms; a cholesterol result is not the way to assess those symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which components need attention, whether the sample required fasting, when to repeat testing, and whether lifestyle changes or statin therapy should be considered alongside your overall risk.

Questions people ask

Is a fasting cholesterol test always needed?

Not always. Follow the preparation instructions given for your specific test and clinical situation.

Does a high result mean I need a statin?

Not automatically. The decision depends on the result, your wider risk profile, medical history and preferences.
