Morphine rash: what to know

Morphine can cause flushing, itching or hives through histamine release without proving a true allergy. A drug reaction can also cause a more widespread red or spotty eruption. The timing may be soon after a dose or later during treatment, and the appearance alone cannot identify the cause. These alternatives do not establish what caused your rash.

Tell the prescribing team or nurse when the rash began, where it started, how it has spread, and whether morphine was given by injection, tablet or another route. Record other medicines taken around the same time and photograph the rash if this can be done safely. Do not take another dose, stop essential pain treatment, or label yourself allergic without speaking with the treating clinician; the team can decide whether to change treatment and what documentation is needed.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face. Seek urgent assessment for blistering, skin peeling, painful widespread redness, sores in the mouth or eyes, or fever with a rapidly spreading rash. A mild itchy area still deserves same-day advice when it follows a new medicine.

Ask whether the appearance suggests histamine-related itching or a drug eruption, whether another medicine could be contributing, what pain-relief options are available, and how the reaction should be recorded. Confirm which symptoms mean emergency care and whether you need follow-up after the rash settles.
