What should you know about morphea symptoms?

A morphea patch may start as a pink, purple, red-brown or lighter area before its centre becomes firmer, smoother or waxy. The border can look more active than the middle. Itch, tenderness or a feeling of tightness may occur, but some patches cause no discomfort. Later, the area may remain lighter or darker, thinner or slightly depressed. Linear patches can cross an arm or leg; scalp involvement may leave a groove or a hairless area. Symptoms vary with the pattern and depth of disease.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a persistent, firm or changing patch rather than trying to diagnose it from colour alone. Record the start date, new symptoms, edge growth, photographs and any effect on nearby movement. Keep the skin moisturised, avoid harsh scrubbing and protect it from excessive sun exposure. If morphea is confirmed, treatment may include a prescribed topical calcineurin inhibitor or Narrowband UVB Phototherapy, depending on activity and depth.

Seek prompt review if the patch spreads quickly, becomes painful, warm, swollen or open. Get timely medical advice for scalp or facial symptoms with hair loss, indentation, headaches or visual changes. New weakness, numbness or difficulty moving a nearby joint should be assessed promptly.
