What should you know about moderate polyhydramnios?

Short answer

Moderate polyhydramnios means the amount of amniotic fluid is higher than expected for your stage of pregnancy, so your maternity team may investigate causes and monitor you and your baby more closely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What moderate polyhydramnios means

Amniotic fluid cushions the baby and allows movement. It is influenced by the baby swallowing and passing urine, as well as the placenta and maternal health. A moderate increase can be linked with diabetes in pregnancy, more than one baby, problems affecting swallowing or fluid balance, or no clear cause. The finding does not by itself predict how your pregnancy will progress.

You may notice a rapidly enlarging abdomen, breathlessness, swelling or discomfort, but some people have no obvious symptoms. Ultrasound can measure fluid, check growth, review the baby’s anatomy and assess the placenta and pregnancy more broadly.

What you can do next

Keep every maternity appointment so your team can review fluid levels, fetal growth, movement, blood glucose when indicated and your symptoms. A growth scan may be used to monitor the baby and look for findings that need specialist review. Follow any advice about diabetes testing, medicines and activity from your maternity team rather than restricting fluids or food on your own.

Ask what symptoms should prompt a call and where to go after hours. Pack your maternity notes and keep your care team’s contact details available, especially if the fluid level is changing quickly.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, sudden breathlessness or severe abdominal pain. If your waters break, seek advice promptly because the amount of fluid can make cord or presentation problems more relevant. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or heavy bleeding.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What measurement places my fluid level in the moderate range? Has the scan shown normal growth and swallowing movements? Do I need diabetes testing or specialist review? How often will scans be repeated, and when should I attend maternity triage?

Questions people ask

Does moderate polyhydramnios mean something is wrong with the baby?

Not necessarily. It can have several causes, and sometimes no clear cause is found; ultrasound and maternity follow-up help assess the pregnancy.

Should I drink less water with polyhydramnios?

Do not restrict fluids unless your maternity team specifically advises it. Ask them how to manage thirst, diet or diabetes testing.
