MMR rash: what to know

A vaccine-related rash may consist of scattered pink or red spots and may occur with a mild fever or tiredness. A rash is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so it can also reflect irritation, heat, an infection, or another skin condition. [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/), and [Drug Rash](/conditions/drug-eruption/) can look different from one another and need context.

Record the date of vaccination, when the rash began, where it started, whether it is itchy, and whether it is spreading. Avoid assuming that every rash after vaccination is caused by the vaccine; a clinician may need to examine the skin.

Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansing and keep the skin cool. Loose clothing may reduce rubbing. Do not scratch, pick, or apply a new medicated cream without advice, especially on a child. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, fainting, or a rapidly developing widespread reaction. Obtain prompt medical advice for purple or bruise-like spots, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, marked illness, or a rash with a high [Fever](/symptoms/fever/).
