Mixed precocious puberty

Puberty involves signals from the brain that stimulate the ovaries or testes. In central precocious puberty, that brain-led pathway starts early. In peripheral precocious puberty, sex hormones rise from another source, such as an adrenal or gonadal disorder, a hormone-producing lesion, or exposure to hormone-containing products. Mixed patterns can develop when peripheral hormones activate the brain pathway as well. Signs may include breast or testicular development, pubic or underarm hair, body odour, acne, rapid growth, or vaginal bleeding.

Arrange review with a paediatric clinician or paediatric endocrinologist when puberty signs appear unusually early or progress quickly. Bring the child’s growth history, medication and supplement list, possible exposure to creams or gels containing hormones, and a timeline of physical changes. Assessment may include examination, growth review, bone-age imaging, hormone tests, and targeted imaging. A female hormone blood panel may be one part of that evaluation; results need interpretation alongside the child’s development and other findings.

Contact the child’s clinician promptly if changes progress quickly, vaginal bleeding occurs, headaches or vision changes develop, or there are signs of severe illness. Sudden neurological symptoms, severe headache, seizures, or unusual weakness require urgent care. Early specialist review helps identify treatable causes and consider effects on growth, development, and emotional wellbeing.
