Missed miscarriage and natural passing

A missed miscarriage is a pregnancy loss that has been identified before the body has passed the pregnancy tissue. Natural passing, sometimes called expectant care, allows the body to begin the process without miscarriage medicine or a procedure. Bleeding may start suddenly, cramps may be strong, or symptoms may remain absent for a while.

A scan or clinician assessment is used to confirm the loss and later check whether tissue remains. Natural care is not a test of how your body should respond, and choosing another option is not a failure. Your emotional wellbeing and ability to access help are part of the decision.

Ask when you should be reviewed and what number to call day or night. Keep pads, fluids, and suitable pain relief available. Note bleeding and pain, and follow the advice about bathing, sex, and inserting anything vaginally while bleeding. Arrange support and avoid being alone if you may need help quickly.

Contact urgent care for bleeding that is very heavy, pain that is severe or worsening, faintness, fever, chills, or discharge with a bad smell. Call emergency services for collapse, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing. A lack of bleeding by itself should be discussed at the planned review rather than managed without advice.

Ask how long the team is comfortable waiting, how completion will be confirmed, what pain relief is suitable, and what happens if tissue remains. Tell the clinician about previous pregnancy loss, anaemia, medicines, or difficulty reaching urgent care, because these details may affect the plan.
