What should you know about missed miscarriage 6 weeks no bleeding?

A missed miscarriage means the pregnancy has stopped developing but the cervix may remain closed and the uterus may not have started passing tissue. That can leave you with no bleeding or only subtle changes. Pregnancy symptoms may also continue while hormone levels gradually change.

At around six weeks, dates can be uncertain because ovulation and implantation do not happen on the same day for everyone. An ultrasound may therefore be inconclusive if it is too early to see the expected structures clearly. Your clinician may recommend a repeat scan or blood tests before confirming the diagnosis.

Keep the scan or assessment appointment recommended by your clinician and ask what result would confirm the diagnosis. Do not take miscarriage medicine without a prescribed plan. If a miscarriage is confirmed, discuss waiting, medical treatment and a procedure, including expected bleeding, pain relief and follow-up.

You can prepare by writing down the first day of your last period, any fertility treatment dates and changes in symptoms. Emotional support from a partner, friend or counsellor may help while you wait for answers.

Seek urgent help for severe or increasing pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, foul-smelling discharge or feeling suddenly very unwell. No bleeding does not remove the need to seek help if pain or faintness develops.

Ask whether the scan was definitive, whether dates could be earlier than expected, when another assessment is needed and what symptoms should trigger urgent care. If the diagnosis is confirmed, ask how each treatment option affects your plans for the next few days.
