How to use misoprostol safely

Misoprostol can make the uterus contract and can also affect the digestive system. The correct instructions depend on why it has been prescribed, how far a pregnancy has progressed when relevant, your medical history, and the route selected by your clinician. Do not substitute a different route or take extra tablets because bleeding or cramping has not started yet.

Before using it, confirm the tablet strength, number of tablets, timing, route, and what to do if vomiting occurs. Keep your planned follow-up, because symptoms alone cannot confirm that treatment is complete.

Read the written instructions before the first dose. Have access to sanitary pads, fluids, a phone, and the contact details for your care team. Avoid taking medicines or supplements that your clinician has not reviewed, especially if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, have an allergy, or may still be pregnant.

For miscarriage care, follow the plan from your maternity or gynaecology team. Misoprostol may also be used in supervised labour care; that setting requires monitoring of you and the baby.
