What should you know about misoprostol at 11 weeks?

Misoprostol is a medicine that makes the uterus contract and helps the cervix soften. A clinician may discuss it for medical management of miscarriage or, in a different setting, to help start labour. The same medicine can have different instructions depending on why it is being used, so another person's plan is not a safe substitute.

Cramping and vaginal bleeding can occur as the uterus responds. Nausea, diarrhoea, chills or a temporary fever may also happen. A follow-up assessment helps confirm whether the intended process is complete and whether further care is needed.

Before taking it, confirm the reason for treatment, the exact instructions, what to do if bleeding starts early, and how follow-up will happen. Arrange access to a trusted adult, transport and a way to contact the treating service. Use menstrual pads so you can observe bleeding, and keep fluids nearby. Do not combine it with other medicines or repeat a dose unless your clinician tells you to.

Seek urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, trouble breathing, confusion, or pain that is worsening rather than easing. Contact the treating service promptly for a fever that persists, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding or pain that does not follow the plan you were given.
