The short answer
A minor turf burn is a friction scrape that removes the surface skin and needs gentle cleaning, cooling and protection. It commonly follows a slide or fall on artificial turf, rough ground or another abrasive surface.
What the injury looks like
The area may be raw, red, tender and warm, with small spots of bleeding or embedded grit. Unlike a heat burn, the main damage comes from rubbing and pressure. Dirt left in the scrape can delay healing and increase infection risk. Pain should gradually ease as the surface closes; increasing pain, spreading redness or new discharge is a reason to have it checked.
Care at home
Wash your hands, then rinse the scrape under clean running water and gently wash around it with mild soap. Remove only loose visible particles with clean tweezers; do not dig into the wound. Pat dry, apply a thin protective layer recommended by a clinician or pharmacist, and cover with a sterile non-stick dressing. Change the dressing when wet or dirty, and avoid sports that rub the area until movement is comfortable and the skin has closed.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review if grit remains embedded, the wound is deep or extensive, bleeding will not stop with steady pressure, or the injury crosses a joint. Seek prompt care for pus, worsening swelling, red streaks, fever or feeling unwell. Ask about tetanus protection when the wound was contaminated or your vaccination history is uncertain. Minor Burn Treatment and Wound Care and Dressing can help when home care is not enough.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether all debris has been removed, which dressing suits the location, when to resume training, and whether your tetanus protection is up to date.

Questions people ask
Should a turf burn be scrubbed?
No. Scrubbing can damage fragile new tissue; use running water and gentle washing instead.
Can I return to sport immediately?
Wait until movement no longer pulls on the wound and the dressing stays clean and secure.
