What should you know about minor third degree burn?

A third-degree burn is a deep injury that needs prompt medical assessment, even if the burned area seems small. It may look white, brown, black, waxy or leathery, and it may feel numb because nerve endings can be damaged.

A superficial burn is usually red and painful, while a deeper burn can destroy layers of skin and reduce sensation. The visible area may not show the full depth at first. Burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals, major joints or a band around a limb deserve urgent assessment. Electrical, chemical and inhalation injuries also require medical care because damage may extend beyond the skin.

Move away from the heat source and call emergency services or arrange urgent medical care. If clothing is not stuck, remove loose items and jewellery near the burn. Cool the area with clean, cool running water; do not use ice. Cover it loosely with a sterile, non-fluffy dressing or clean cloth. Do not peel away stuck fabric, apply butter or creams, break blisters, or pull off damaged skin. Keep the person warm while the burned area is protected.

Treat suspected third-degree burns as urgent, particularly when there is numbness, pale or charred skin, severe pain around the area, swelling, breathing difficulty or signs of shock such as clammy skin and faintness. A clinician can assess depth, circulation, infection risk and the need for specialist care.
