Minor cradle cap: what to know

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, commonly causes greasy or dry flakes and yellowish scale on the scalp. It may extend to the eyebrows, behind the ears, or skin folds. Babies are often otherwise well, and the scale is not a sign that the scalp is dirty. Redness, oozing, cracking, marked itch, or a rash beyond typical areas can point to another problem.

Apply a small amount of a clinician-approved emollient to soften scale, leave it briefly, then wash with a mild baby shampoo and gently brush away loosened flakes. Never pick or scrape attached scale, and keep products away from the eyes. If a clinician suspects yeast involvement or another cause, they may recommend topical antifungal treatment and explain where and how to apply it.

Arrange medical advice if the scalp is painful, very red, swollen, bleeding, oozing, foul-smelling, or not improving with gentle care. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, feeds poorly, or the rash spreads widely. Avoid using medicated creams, essential oils, or adult dandruff products without advice for an infant.

Ask whether the scale fits cradle cap, which emollient and shampoo are suitable, and how often to use them. Check whether antifungal treatment is needed, how to protect the eyes and face, and which changes mean the baby should be examined sooner.
