Minor cellulitis: what to know

Cellulitis often causes an area of skin redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, or pain. It can begin through a small cut, bite, cracked skin, or another opening that is easy to miss. Athlete's foot, diabetes, and reduced circulation can increase concern about skin breaks and healing. The border may expand, and fever can occur even when the original wound looks minor.

Seek same-day medical advice for suspected cellulitis so the area can be examined and treatment selected. Marking the edge of redness with the time can help you notice spread, but do not delay care to observe it. Keep the skin clean, avoid squeezing or cutting the area, elevate a swollen limb when comfortable, and follow the prescribed course if medicine is given.

Go urgently for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, red streaks, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or a very high or persistent fever.
