Minor bed bug bites: what to know

Bites may appear as itchy red or darker bumps, sometimes grouped or arranged in a line on exposed skin. New spots can appear after sleeping because the skin reaction may be delayed. Scratching can break the surface and allow infection. A bite pattern is not enough to confirm the source, since other insects and skin conditions may look similar.

Wash the area gently, pat it dry, and use a cool compress for short periods to ease itching. Keep fingernails short and avoid picking. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine or a topical corticosteroid is suitable for your age, health conditions, and other medicines. Address the sleeping environment with a qualified pest professional; treating the skin alone will not remove an infestation.

Get urgent help for swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or widespread hives. Arrange medical review if redness, warmth, pain, swelling, pus, or fever develops around a bite, or if the rash keeps spreading or itching prevents sleep. Infants, older adults, and people with significant health conditions may need earlier advice.
