What should you know about a Mindray pulse oximeter?
Updated

Short answer
A Mindray pulse oximeter estimates blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate through a sensor placed on a finger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it measures
The device uses light passing through tissue to estimate how much oxygen is carried in the blood and to detect a pulse. It does not measure breathing effort, carbon dioxide, blood pressure or the cause of breathlessness. A displayed value can be affected by cold fingers, movement, poor circulation, nail products or an incorrectly positioned sensor.
Treat the number as one part of the picture. Someone can feel seriously unwell despite a reading that appears reassuring, and a fluctuating display may reflect signal quality rather than a sudden change in health.
How to get a clearer reading
Sit quietly and warm your hand. Remove anything that obscures the sensor, place it securely on a finger, keep the hand still and wait for the display to settle. Repeat once if the signal is poor, recording the reading with the time and your symptoms. Follow any personalised monitoring instructions from your clinician rather than chasing a single number.
Do not use the oximeter to decide to stop prescribed oxygen or medicines. A GP consultation can help interpret repeated readings in context and decide whether examination or testing is needed.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, severe chest pain or inability to speak normally because of breathlessness. Contact a clinician promptly when breathlessness is worsening, readings remain concerning after a careful repeat, or the device repeatedly fails to obtain a signal while you feel unwell.
Questions for your doctor
How should I use this device and record results? What reading or symptom combination needs urgent action for me? Could circulation, movement or my medicines affect the display?

Questions people ask
Can a pulse oximeter diagnose lung disease?
No. It provides measurements that may guide assessment, but diagnosis requires symptoms, examination and sometimes other tests.
Why does the reading keep changing?
Movement, cold skin, poor circulation or a weak sensor signal can make the display unstable.
