What should you know about mindfulness for ADHD?

Short answer
Mindfulness may support ADHD by training attention, noticing impulses and creating a pause before responding.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What mindfulness means in ADHD
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to present-moment experience with curiosity, then gently returning when the mind wanders. With ADHD, the practice is not about forcing the mind to stay still. It is about recognising distraction, restlessness or an emotional reaction sooner. Difficulty concentrating, irritability and feeling anxious can occur for many reasons, so these experiences do not establish an ADHD diagnosis.
Short, guided practices may be easier than sitting silently for a long time. Benefits, if they occur, are usually noticed as a small change in awareness or recovery after distraction rather than a cure for ADHD.
How to try it
Begin with a brief practice: feel your feet on the floor, follow a few breaths, and label thoughts as thinking before returning to the breath. Use a timer, audio guide or visual cue, and practise at a predictable point in the day. Mindful movement, eating or walking may suit someone who finds stillness difficult.
Keep expectations practical. Combine mindfulness with the care plan recommended by a qualified clinician, including prescribed medication or behavioural strategies when appropriate. A mental health assessment can help separate ADHD from sleep problems, anxiety, low mood or other causes of concentration changes.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical assessment if concentration problems affect work, study, relationships or daily safety, especially when they began in childhood or occur across settings. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, confusion or inability to care for yourself. Stop a practice that causes marked distress, panic or detachment and tell a clinician what happened.
Questions for your doctor
Could ADHD, anxiety, sleep difficulty or another issue explain my symptoms? Which mindfulness format fits my attention span? How should I combine practice with my current treatment, and what signs mean I should stop or seek help?

Try a shorter guided practice or mindful walking, and discuss persistent distress with a clinician.
