Flow cytometry examines cells as they pass individually through a stream of fluid and a beam of light. Antibodies carrying fluorescent markers can attach to selected proteins on or inside cells. In oncology, this information can help distinguish types of blood or immune cells and detect an unusual population. It may support the assessment of leukaemia, lymphoma or other blood-related conditions, but a result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings and other laboratory tests.

Seek prompt medical care for fever during cancer treatment, unusual bleeding, severe breathlessness, confusion, or rapidly worsening weakness. After a marrow sample, contact the clinical team for persistent bleeding, increasing redness, swelling, drainage or severe pain at the site.

Ask why flow cytometry is being requested, which sample will be used, what the test can and cannot establish, and how the result will fit with microscopy, blood counts or imaging. Ask who will explain the report and whether a repeat or additional test is anticipated.
