What should you know about mild ulcerative colitis symptoms?

Ulcerative colitis inflammation affects the bowel lining. Symptoms may include frequent small bowel movements, urgency, mucus or blood, abdominal discomfort and fatigue. Some people mainly notice urgency, while others notice diarrhoea or bleeding.

These symptoms can have other causes, so they do not diagnose ulcerative colitis by themselves. A clinician considers the pattern, examination and appropriate tests; the condition itself commonly presents with bowel urgency and altered stools.

Write down bowel movements, urgency, blood or mucus, pain, temperature, food and medicines. This can show whether a change is brief or continuing. Continue prescribed treatment unless your care team advises otherwise, and avoid taking anti-diarrhoeal medicine during a flare without checking first.

Arrange a GP consultation for new, persistent or worsening symptoms. Ask about tests and whether a gastroenterology review is needed, particularly if tiredness, poor appetite or weight loss is developing.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion or signs of dehydration. Promptly contact your care team if stools become much more frequent, blood increases or fever and weakness appear together.
