Mild tonsillitis: what to know

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, commonly linked to a viral infection. Some cases are caused by bacteria such as those responsible for Strep Throat, and an examination or throat test may help guide treatment. White patches, bad breath and tender neck glands can occur, but none of these findings alone identifies the cause.

Symptoms may be mild and settle with supportive care, while worsening one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice or difficulty opening the mouth can indicate a complication needing assessment.

Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods or cool drinks if swallowing hurts. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe the throat for adults who can gargle safely. Use only age-appropriate pain relief as directed on the label or advised by a clinician. Do not start leftover antibiotics; Antibiotic Treatment is useful only when a clinician decides a bacterial cause is likely or confirmed.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe dehydration, rapidly increasing neck swelling or a voice that becomes markedly muffled. Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent or worsening pain, ongoing Fever, recurrent episodes, or symptoms that make drinking difficult. A child who is unusually sleepy or unable to drink needs prompt assessment.
