Mild sun stroke symptoms: what to know

Heat illness develops when the body cannot cool itself effectively. Heavy sweating may occur, and the skin can feel clammy. A person may also have a fast pulse, weakness, irritability or difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can overlap with dehydration or another illness, so the trigger and the person's overall condition matter.

Sun exposure is not required; hot, poorly ventilated surroundings, exercise and inadequate fluid intake can all contribute. Confusion, collapse or a seizure suggests a severe emergency rather than a mild problem.

Move to a cool or shaded place, loosen extra clothing and rest. Sip cool water if the person is awake and able to swallow. A cool, damp cloth or gentle cooling of the skin can help. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity while recovering, and do not leave someone who is dizzy alone. If symptoms do not start easing after cooling and fluids, arrange a GP Consultation.

Call emergency services if there is confusion, fainting, a seizure, severe weakness, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or skin that is very hot with worsening symptoms. Seek prompt medical assessment for persistent headache, dizziness or vomiting, especially in a child, older adult, pregnant person or someone with a chronic condition. Sudden one-sided weakness or numbness needs emergency assessment because it can indicate Stroke, regardless of the heat exposure.
