What should you know about mild strep throat?

Mild strep throat can still be a bacterial infection, so symptoms alone cannot confirm it; a clinician may use an examination and throat test to guide treatment. A mild case may involve a scratchy or painful throat, discomfort when swallowing, mildly swollen tonsils, or tender glands in the neck. Some people have little or no fever. Cough, runny nose and hoarseness are more suggestive of a viral illness, but they do not replace an assessment when strep is a concern.

Strep throat, also called streptococcal pharyngitis, is an infection of the throat caused by certain Streptococcus bacteria. The word mild describes the intensity of the symptoms, not whether the infection is present. A healthcare professional may look at your throat, feel the neck glands and ask about the timing of symptoms and contact with illness. A rapid throat test or laboratory swab may be used when the examination does not give a clear answer. Tonsillitis can occur with strep throat, although tonsil inflammation can also have other causes.

Arrange a GP consultation if a sore throat is persistent, becoming more painful, or accompanied by fever, swollen neck glands or inflamed tonsils. Until you are assessed, drink fluids regularly, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and rest. Warm drinks or cool foods may soothe the throat. Do not start leftover antibiotics or share antibiotics with someone else. Seek urgent medical help if you have trouble breathing, cannot swallow fluids or saliva, are drooling, or develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck. Prompt assessment is also needed for signs of dehydration, severe weakness, confusion, or a voice that becomes muffled. Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening rather than settling, or if a prescribed antibiotic causes a concerning reaction such as facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Mild symptoms should not delay care when swallowing or breathing is affected.
