What should you know about mild onycholysis?

The nail plate has partly separated from the skin beneath it, creating a pale or white-looking area. It may affect a fingernail or toenail and is often not painful, although tenderness can occur after trauma. The detached portion will not reattach to the nail bed; healthy nail needs to grow forward from the base. Repeated wet work, tight shoes, picking, manicures, cleaning products, fungal infection, or nail psoriasis can contribute.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the loose edge, and do not pull, scrape, or place objects underneath it. Dry hands and feet carefully after washing, wear roomy footwear, and use gloves for prolonged contact with water or detergents. Avoid nail polish, artificial nails, and harsh removers until the nail settles. A clinician can examine nail colour, thickness, debris, and nearby skin to decide whether testing or treatment for Nail Fungus, Nail Psoriasis, or another cause is needed.

Arrange medical advice if the separation is spreading, affects several nails, keeps returning, or appears without an obvious trigger. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, a dark mark after injury, or a nail that becomes markedly distorted. People with poor circulation, reduced sensation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early because a small nail injury can be harder to manage.

Ask whether the pattern suggests trauma, infection, psoriasis, or a medication effect; whether a nail sample is useful; and which products or activities should be paused while the nail grows out.
