Mild oligohydramnios: what to know

Amniotic fluid cushions the baby and allows movement. Its amount changes across pregnancy and is estimated by ultrasound rather than judged by symptoms alone. Lower fluid can be associated with a leak, placental function concerns, dehydration, some medicines, or changes in the baby's urinary system, although a single scan may not explain why it is lower. Your clinician will consider gestational age, fetal growth, movement, blood flow, and whether fluid remains low on repeat assessment.

Attend the recommended follow-up scans and pregnancy appointments. Drink normally unless your clinician has given different instructions, take prescribed medicines as directed, and learn your baby's usual movement pattern. Your team may check growth, fluid, fetal heart rate, and blood flow, and may discuss whether birth should occur earlier if the findings persist or the baby's wellbeing changes. Do not rely on home fluid remedies or delay review after suspected leaking.

Call your maternity unit promptly if fluid leaks from the vagina, movements are reduced or noticeably different, bleeding occurs, contractions become regular, or you develop fever or persistent abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, or severe breathlessness. Follow the individual timing given by your maternity team because urgency depends on pregnancy stage and scan findings.

Ask how the fluid was measured, whether a repeat growth scan is planned, what fetal growth and blood-flow checks show, whether leaking membranes are suspected, which movement changes require a call, and when induction might be considered.
