What should you know about mild mumps?

Short answer

Understanding mild mumps
Mumps is a viral infection that often affects the salivary glands beside the cheeks and jaw. Mumps may present with swollen, tender cheeks or jaw, fever, headache, muscle aches, reduced appetite, and pain when chewing or swallowing. Some people have mild illness or no obvious gland swelling, so symptoms can be easy to overlook. The infection spreads through respiratory droplets and saliva during close contact. Swollen glands can have many causes; their presence does not by itself establish mumps.
What to do at home
Contact a GP for advice before attending a clinic so the team can reduce exposure to others. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Use only pain or fever medicine that is suitable for you and follow the label or clinician’s directions. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels, and other items that contact saliva. Stay away from school, work, and close contact for the period advised by your clinician. Check vaccination records and mention any possible exposure.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizures, breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, severe abdominal pain, or sudden testicular pain or swelling. Arrange prompt assessment if facial or jaw swelling is worsening, fever persists, or drinking becomes difficult. Children, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity should obtain individual advice early.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether testing is appropriate, how long to stay away from close contact, how to manage jaw pain, and whether your MMR vaccination record needs review.

Questions people ask
Can mumps be mild?
Yes. Some people have limited symptoms or little visible swelling, but they can still need assessment and infection-control advice.
Does swollen jaw always mean mumps?
No. Swollen glands have several possible causes, so a clinician must interpret the symptoms and examination.
