What should you know about mild fever temp?

Body temperature varies with the measurement site, time of day, recent activity, and the device used. A single borderline reading can be misleading if taken just after exercise, a hot drink, or heavy covering. Repeat it with the same device and method, then consider whether the person is alert, drinking, breathing comfortably, and behaving normally.

Fever can occur with a common cold, COVID-19, acute bronchitis, or other infections. In children, bronchiolitis and croup may also cause temperature changes. The number does not identify which condition is present.

Let the person rest, offer frequent fluids, and avoid overheating the room or piling on blankets. Record the reading, method, time, medicines, and symptoms. Use fever medicine only as directed for that person; check with a pharmacist when treating a child or when pregnancy, liver disease, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or regular medicines are involved. Never combine products that contain the same ingredient.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, fainting, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, or a rash that does not fade under pressure. Prompt medical advice is needed for a baby younger than three months with fever, or for anyone whose temperature is rising, recurring, or accompanied by severe pain or persistent vomiting. Trust a clearly unwell appearance even when the reading seems mild.
