What should you know about mild cheilitis?

Cheilitis can cause dryness, scaling, redness, soreness, burning, small cracks, or peeling. Triggers include cold or dry air, saliva, fragranced lip products, flavouring agents in toothpaste, cosmetics, and contact with irritating foods. Some cases relate to allergy, eczema, infection, medication, or sun exposure. Cracks focused at the corners may have a different cause from diffuse chapping. A clinician can examine the pattern and surrounding skin when the cause is unclear.

Stop suspected lip products and avoid licking, biting, picking, and peeling loose skin. Apply a plain, fragrance-free ointment or balm frequently, especially after eating and before sleep. Choose gentle toothpaste and keep spicy or acidic foods away from cracked areas if they sting. Protect lips from wind and sun. Emollient Therapy can restore the protective barrier. If inflammation persists, a clinician may prescribe Topical Corticosteroids for a limited period and explain where and how to apply them.

Book a medical review if symptoms last despite careful protection, recur often, spread beyond the lips, or interfere with eating and speaking. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, deep bleeding cracks, or trouble breathing. A sore that does not heal, a persistent rough patch, or repeated corner cracking also deserves assessment.
