What should you know about midge bite rash?

A bite may leave a small raised bump, redness, warmth, or several itchy spots on exposed skin. Scratching can break the surface and allow infection. A rash that appears away from the bites, follows a new product, affects skin folds, or continues without improvement may have another explanation, such as contact dermatitis, heat rash, ringworm, or scabies. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Gently wash the area, use a cool damp cloth, and avoid scratching. Keep fingernails short and choose loose clothing if fabric rubs the spots. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-itch product is suitable for your age, skin, medicines, and pregnancy status. Reduce further exposure by using insect screens or covering exposed skin outdoors.

Arrange medical review if redness spreads, pain or warmth increases, pus appears, fever develops, or the rash persists or repeatedly returns. Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, faintness, or trouble breathing. A rapidly changing rash with severe illness also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits an insect reaction, how to treat itching safely, and whether another condition should be considered. Tell the clinician when the spots began, where you were exposed, what products you used, and whether anyone else has similar symptoms.
