What should you know about mid face fat transfer?

Short answer
Mid-face fat transfer moves a person's own processed fat into selected areas to improve volume and contour, with planning shaped by anatomy, donor sites, and healing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the procedure works
Fat transfer, also called facial fat grafting, combines harvesting fat from a donor area with careful preparation and placement in the mid-face. The aim may be to support the cheeks, soften a hollow, or improve a transition around the lower eyelid and nose. It is a procedure with both treatment and donor-site considerations, rather than a simple surface injection. Healing can include swelling, bruising, firmness, and changes in contour while tissues settle. Tear trough hollows may coexist with cheek volume changes, but the thin skin around the eye requires especially careful assessment.
Preparing and recovering
Discuss your medical history, smoking or nicotine use, medicines, allergies, previous facial procedures, and the areas that could provide donor fat. Ask how the surgeon will protect facial proportions and what happens if the planned volume is not suitable during the procedure. Arrange practical help for the early recovery period and follow instructions about sleeping position, wound care, activity, and pressure on treated areas. Dermal fillers may be an alternative when a smaller or adjustable volume change is preferred; lip fillers are a separate treatment and do not address the mid-face.
Warning signs
Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, wound discharge, rapidly worsening swelling, or a new area of skin colour change. Sudden vision symptoms, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or trouble speaking require emergency care. Some bruising, swelling, tightness, and unevenness can occur during healing, but a change that is worsening rather than settling needs professional review.
Questions before consent
Ask which areas will be treated, where fat will be harvested, what type of anaesthesia is planned, how contour will be reviewed, and what recovery restrictions apply. Confirm the follow-up schedule, possible alternatives, and who to contact outside office hours if you develop pain, fever, skin changes, or vision symptoms.

Questions people ask
Is fat transfer the same as a filler injection?
No. Fat transfer involves harvesting and placing your own fat, while filler uses an injected manufactured material.
Why can the result look uneven early on?
Swelling, bruising, firmness, and different healing speeds can temporarily affect symmetry during recovery.
