Microneedling for tattoo removal: what to know

Microneedling creates controlled skin openings and is used for selected texture concerns. Tattoo pigment sits deeper in the skin, so puncturing the surface does not reliably target or clear it. It can instead irritate the area, spread pigment irregularly, or add inflammation and scarring.

Laser tattoo removal uses pulses of light chosen for the ink and skin. A Picosecond Laser or Q-Switched Laser may be considered, but the right device depends on pigment colours, depth, location, age of the tattoo, and your skin’s response. Some colours are harder to treat, and partial fading rather than a completely clear result may be the realistic goal.

Have the tattoo examined by a qualified clinician experienced in laser procedures. Share your skin type, tendency to form raised scars or dark marks, previous reactions, medicines, and whether the tattoo is cosmetic, traumatic, or professionally applied. Do not needle, abrade, or apply unapproved chemicals to the tattoo at home.

After a laser session, follow the wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, avoid picking blisters or crusts, and protect it from sun exposure. Treatment is commonly spaced so the skin can heal and the body can clear fragmented pigment. The clinician should explain expected colour change, discomfort, and the possibility of temporary light or dark marks.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, severe swelling, or a wound that is not healing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or swelling of the face. A raised or expanding scar also deserves review before another session.
