What should you know about microneedling atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are depressions in the skin that can follow acne, chickenpox, inflammation, or injury. Microneedling uses a sterile device with fine needles to make tiny, evenly spaced openings in the scarred area. The healing response can encourage collagen remodeling and make edges and texture look less noticeable over time.

It works best when a clinician assesses the scar pattern first. Narrow ice-pick scars, broad rolling scars, and sharply edged boxcar scars may respond differently, and one technique may not suit every area. Colour changes after inflammation are separate from a depression, so needling may not address all of the visible difference.

Choose a qualified medical practitioner who can identify active acne, infection, eczema, or a tendency to form raised scars before treatment. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, or severe allergic symptoms.

Arrange a review if darkening, lightening, persistent sensitivity, or a firm raised change develops after treatment. A clinician can distinguish expected healing from a reaction and decide whether further sessions or another scar treatment is appropriate.
