What should you know about microdiscectomy operation?

A herniated disc can extend into the space occupied by a nerve root. The surgeon reaches the affected area through a small back incision, moves tissues aside, and removes the loose or protruding disc fragment rather than removing the entire disc. A surgical microscope can help the team see the nerve and nearby structures.

The operation is aimed at nerve-related symptoms such as sciatica and radiating leg pain. It does not rebuild a worn disc, so back discomfort may have a different course from leg pain. The plan depends on examination findings and imaging. Alternatives may include physiotherapy, an epidural steroid injection, or endoscopic spine surgery.

Give the surgical team a complete list of medicines and supplements, and report smoking, allergies, sleep-apnoea symptoms, or previous reactions to anaesthesia. Plan transport home and help with daily tasks. Afterward, walk as instructed, protect the incision, and avoid lifting or twisting until your team gives clearance.

A gradual rehabilitation programme can address posture, mobility, and trunk control. Do not increase activity simply because the incision looks better; nerve recovery and tissue healing can follow different timelines. Attend planned reviews and report changes rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, swelling, drainage, fever, or pain that is not settling. Get urgent medical help for new or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Ask what finding makes surgery suitable, which symptoms it is expected to address, when you may sit, drive, work, and exercise, and how recurrence or persistent symptoms would be assessed.
