Short answer

Menopause plus refers to the wider physical, emotional, sexual, and pelvic changes that can accompany the end of menstrual cycles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Menopause
A stage marked by periods stopping, with a transition before it.
Symptoms
Track the changes that affect sleep, comfort, mood, or daily life.

What menopause can affect

Menopause is a stage of life defined by periods stopping, but the transition can involve more than menstrual changes. Hot flushes and night sweats may disturb sleep; mood changes can affect concentration and wellbeing; vaginal dryness may make sex or pelvic examinations uncomfortable; and low sex drive can have hormonal, physical, emotional, or relationship-related contributors.

Pelvic pressure, a bulge, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel, or discomfort with movement may point to pelvic organ prolapse rather than menopause alone. Symptoms vary, and one symptom does not establish a diagnosis.

How to get useful support

Keep a simple symptom diary covering sleep, sweating, mood, vaginal comfort, urinary or bowel changes, and bleeding. Bring it to an appointment, along with your medicines, contraception, medical history, and what you want to improve first.

A clinician can discuss practical measures, local vaginal treatments, hormone options, non-hormonal medicines, pelvic-floor assessment, or talking support according to your symptoms and health history. If a symptom is new, severe, or changing quickly, ask for an assessment instead of labelling it menopause.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical review for bleeding after menopause, a new breast or pelvic lump, unexplained weight change, or persistent pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding with weakness or breathlessness, sudden one-sided weakness, or thoughts of harming yourself.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask which symptoms could share a cause, whether any examination or tests are appropriate, and how each treatment may affect bleeding, sleep, sexual comfort, or pelvic symptoms. You can also ask about non-hormonal choices and when to return if the plan does not help.

Questions people ask

Does menopause affect more than periods?

Yes. Temperature changes, sleep disruption, mood changes, vaginal dryness, sexual concerns, and pelvic symptoms may occur during the transition.

Should every symptom be treated with hormones?

No. Options depend on the symptom, your health history, preferences, and whether a non-hormonal approach may suit you.
