What should you know about marking cellulitis with pen?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and tissue that can cause expanding redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness. A clinician may draw a visible line at the edge so changes can be compared during monitoring. Use a clean, washable pen on intact skin, avoid scrubbing the area, and record the time of the mark. The line is only a reference: redness may change unevenly, and treatment decisions depend on symptoms and examination.

Arrange medical advice promptly when cellulitis is suspected, especially if you have Type 2 Diabetes, a weakened immune system, or a foot wound. Keep the area clean, follow prescribed antibiotics exactly, rest and elevate a swollen limb when advised, and take note of new pain, Fever, redness, or Skin Swelling. Athlete's Foot can create cracks that allow bacteria into the skin, so mention it to the clinician. Do not rely on the pen mark to decide that treatment is working.

Seek urgent medical care if redness passes the line, pain or swelling is worsening, the skin becomes blistered or dark, or you develop Fever, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, or severe weakness.
