What should you know about lumps forming under the skin?

Describe whether the lump is soft or hard, mobile or fixed, smooth or irregular, and whether it sits in the skin or deeper tissue. Tenderness, warmth, redness, drainage, and growth provide useful clues, but none gives a diagnosis by itself. Boils often become sore and inflamed around a follicle. A cyst may feel round and remain under the skin until it becomes irritated. Basal Cell Carcinoma can appear as a persistent skin growth or sore, so a lesion that bleeds, crusts, or fails to heal should be examined rather than watched indefinitely.

Take a clear photograph beside a familiar object and record when you first noticed the change. Avoid repeated pressing, home cutting, or harsh chemical treatments. Keep irritated skin protected from friction and use gentle cleansing. A clinician may examine nearby lymph nodes, compare the lump with surrounding tissue, or decide whether imaging or sampling is needed. Treatment depends on the cause; steroid injection into the skin is used only for selected inflammatory problems, not every lump.

Book a medical assessment if a lump is new and persistent, grows, becomes fixed, changes the overlying skin, or returns after treatment. Seek prompt care for severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or rapid swelling. A lump that affects movement, sensation, breathing, or swallowing needs urgent attention. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before having an unexplained lump checked.

Ask what features were found on examination, whether the lump is in the skin or deeper, what changes to monitor, and whether removal, testing, or observation is appropriate.
