Lump Under the Skin on the Eyebrow: What to Know

The eyebrow contains hair follicles and lies over the brow bone, so a lump may be in the skin, within a follicle, or deeper after a knock. A cyst or blocked follicle can feel smooth and move slightly, while inflammation tends to cause tenderness or warmth. Skin lumps can have many causes, and a photo or touch assessment cannot always distinguish them.

A boil may present as a painful, red, swollen area that can develop drainage. A firm bump that persists or develops scaling, crusting, bleeding, or surface breakdown should be checked because basal cell carcinoma can affect exposed facial skin.

Avoid plucking hairs over the area, squeezing the lump, or inserting a needle. Cleanse gently and note whether it changes after an injury or with eyebrow movement. Do not use steroid injections or strong creams near the eye unless a qualified clinician has examined the site. Treatment might involve observation, removal, or care for inflammation, depending on the cause.

Seek prompt assessment if swelling spreads toward the eyelid, pain increases, pus appears, or you develop fever. Get urgent help for reduced vision, double vision, pain moving the eye, or difficulty opening it. Arrange a skin review for a lump that enlarges, returns, bleeds, or does not settle.

Ask whether the lump is in the skin or deeper, whether an old injury could explain it, and whether the eyebrow or eyelid needs examination. Ask what changes should prompt an earlier appointment and whether removal would leave a visible mark.
