Itchy red skin under the eye: what to know

The skin beneath the eye is thin and can react to cosmetics, cleansers, sunscreen, hair products, or rubbing. Allergic conjunctivitis may cause nearby puffiness and itching, while conjunctivitis can add redness, watering, or discharge from the eye itself. A rash limited to the skin may behave differently from redness on the eye surface. One-sided warmth, tenderness, spreading redness, or marked swelling is more concerning than mild irritation after a new product.

Stop any new product near the eyes and rinse the skin gently with lukewarm water. Do not scratch, use steroid or antibiotic cream near the eye without medical advice, or apply someone else’s eye drops. A cool compress over closed eyes can reduce itch and puffiness. Keep hands, towels, pillowcases, and cosmetics clean, and avoid eye makeup or contact lenses while the eye itself is irritated.

Seek urgent help for severe eye pain, reduced vision, pain when moving the eye, marked light sensitivity, fever with spreading facial redness, or rapidly increasing swelling. Get prompt advice after a chemical splash or injury. Arrange a review if the rash lasts, becomes scaly or painful, develops blisters, or keeps returning despite removing possible triggers.

Ask whether the redness is coming from eyelid skin or the eye surface, which products to avoid, whether treatment is needed, and which symptoms would require same-day eye care.
