What should you know about impetigo stages?

The first sign may be a small area of redness, irritation, or itching, often around the nose and mouth or on exposed skin. Fluid-filled blisters may appear and break easily, leaving moist shallow sores. As the surface dries, a yellowish or honey-coloured crust can cover the area. New spots may appear nearby because touching, scratching, or shared towels can move the infection to other skin.

Appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis can also leave itchy, inflamed skin that becomes scratched or crusted.

Gently wash the affected skin with mild soap and water, pat it dry, and avoid picking or peeling crusts. Keep fingernails short and wash hands after touching the area.
