Quick treatment for impetigo: safe next steps

Impetigo is a contagious infection affecting the outer layers of skin. It may begin as small red spots or blisters, then leave moist erosions and crusts as they break. New lesions can appear when bacteria move by scratching or shared personal items. The rash may be confused with infected atopic dermatitis, cold sores or other causes of crusting, so speed should not mean guessing. A pharmacist can guide mild cases, while a clinician can assess broader or unusual patterns.

Wash hands, gently cleanse the lesions, soften crusts and pat the skin dry. Cover areas that can be covered, avoid touching the face after touching sores, and use separate towels, clothing and bedding until the infection is controlled. Do not scratch, squeeze blisters or apply several antibiotic products together. Arrange advice about topical antibiotic therapy or another treatment suited to the site and extent; use any recommended medicine exactly as directed.

Obtain prompt medical care if the rash is spreading quickly, involves the eye, causes increasing pain or swelling, or affects a large area. Fever, chills, marked tiredness, rapidly expanding redness or pus under the skin require urgent evaluation.
