Impetigo on the Upper Lip: What to Know

The infection often starts where the skin barrier is irritated, scratched, or affected by another itchy condition. The upper lip can be exposed to frequent touching, wiping, and nasal discharge, which may move bacteria to nearby skin. A crusted patch may enlarge or appear in more than one spot. It can spread through direct contact or shared towels, face cloths, pillowcases, and cosmetics. Avoid picking the crusts, and do not share personal items while the area is active. Gently wash the area with lukewarm water and mild cleanser, then pat it dry. Wash your hands before and after touching the sore, keep fingernails short, and use a clean towel. A clinician may recommend a prescribed cream for a small, localised infection or an oral antibiotic when lesions are more extensive or difficult to treat locally. Use medicine exactly as directed and do not apply steroid cream, antiseptic mixtures, or leftover antibiotics without advice. Arrange medical assessment if the sore is spreading, recurring, painful, or not settling with gentle care. Seek prompt help if redness or swelling moves toward the eye, the lip becomes markedly swollen, there is fever, or the child or adult seems unwell. Do not squeeze lesions near the mouth; a clinician can distinguish impetigo from cold sores, dermatitis, or another infection.
