Impetigo and MRSA

MRSA means methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a strain of bacteria that is not covered by some commonly used antibiotics. It may cause crusted sores, pus, tenderness, or surrounding redness, but appearance cannot reliably identify resistance. A clinician may take a swab from drainage when the infection is recurrent, extensive, worsening, or not responding as expected. Previous MRSA infection and close-contact spread can affect the assessment.

Keep the area clean and covered, wash hands carefully, and do not share towels, clothing, sports equipment, razors, or dressings. Wash fabrics that contact the sore and avoid squeezing it. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course early. If MRSA is suspected or confirmed, the clinician selects an effective topical or oral medicine according to the site and findings; household contacts should not self-treat.

Arrange prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, or worsening pain, particularly after treatment has started. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, rapid deterioration, red streaks, severe weakness, or infection near the eye. A recurrent cluster of sores or failure to improve needs reassessment rather than a change to home remedies.
