Impetigo caused by strep

Streptococcus is one group of bacteria that can cause impetigo. It may enter through a scratch, insect bite, eczema flare, or other break in the skin. The infection often produces red sores that ooze and develop a crust; the appearance alone cannot identify the exact bacterium. A clinician may diagnose impetigo by examining the skin and decide whether testing is useful.

Strep-related impetigo can pass between people through skin contact or shared towels, clothing, and bedding. Keeping the sores covered and avoiding scratching helps reduce transfer to nearby skin and other people.

Clean the area gently, dry it without rubbing, and follow the prescribed treatment plan. A localised infection may be treated with a topical antibiotic, while more widespread sores may require medicine taken by mouth. Finish an oral course as instructed, even if the skin starts to look better. Wash hands before and after care, keep nails short, and wash fabrics that touched the lesions. Contact a clinician when you suspect impetigo, especially if sores are spreading or involve the eyes, lips, or another sensitive area. Seek urgent help for fever, rapidly worsening redness or swelling, severe pain, or a person who appears very unwell. Return for review if prescribed treatment is difficult to use, symptoms worsen, or new lesions continue to appear.
